Heart of Thorns: Lukewarm?

Compared to the release of Final Fantasy XIV’s expansions, Heavensward, the build up to the launch of Guild Wars 2’s first expansion, Heart of Thorns, has been extremely lukewarm – apart from the people who play religiously. Guild Wars 2 has been a strange game for many people – it’s nothing like the original game which turned many off from the start, instead being closer to World of Warcraft than Guild Wars. The game being free to play helped, certainly, with it being one of the better models of that payment type in the genre.
But the game tailed off. No significant updates came out, the game stagnated and, despite the developer’s assertion that they would “never release a paid for expansion” here we are, almost 3 years later, with the first major paid expansion on the horizon. Compared to games like Final Fantasy XIV the content is severely lacking, despite having an extra year on the market.
