Styx: Shards of Darkness Review

Shards of Darkness was initially scheduled for release in 2016, however, developers pushed the date forward (to March 14th, 2017) to give them enough time to upgrade the game’s engine from Unreal 3 to Unreal 4. This seems to have paid off as, from the trailer; the graphics are free flowing, detailed and almost immerses you into Styx’s world as you play. It’s simply amazing.

In this latest installation of the game, Styx is tasked with an important mission to infiltrate Korrangar and find out why the dark elves are working with the dwarfs. Our goblin anti-hero has received some awesome new abilities, most notably; a new Crossbar which he can use to cause dangling objects to fall on unsuspecting enemies without compromising his hiding spot.

Furthermore, Styx has a new view mode ability that helps him find hidden pathways and whatnot. Cloning and teleportation have also received significant upgrades and a variety of tactics and playing styles are available for each level to suit everyone’s needs. Developers have incorporated breaking the fourth wall into the gameplay which makes the game humorous and entertaining. During his adventures, he takes a swipe at other competitors like Assassin’s Creed and constantly runs his mouth with witty jokes and sarcasm (Reminds you of certain ‘merc with a mouth’ doesn’t it?). You won’t hear the end of it when you cause his death.

There is also going to be a new Co-op mode where players can go on missions together. They will be able to combine their individual characters into one super goblin with increased power and enhanced abilities to help get out of sticky situations. Shards of Darkness promises to be a big hit considering all the attention it has garnered in the gaming world in recent months. It is a sequel to Master of Shadows that had a good reception a few years back and if its predecessor is anything to go by; then the latest installation of Styx promises to be a hit as well.
